Today we will visit the Montazah Palace Gardens, and then the highlight of our time in Alexandria the new Library of Alexandria. The New Bibliotheca Alexandrina is dedicated to recapturing the spirit of openness and scholarship of the original Bibliotheca Alexandrina. It is much more than a library; it is a center of excellence in the production and dissemination of knowledge as well as a place of dialogue, learning, and understanding between cultures and peoples. After our visit to the library, we will have lunch and visit the Citadel of Qaitbay, which was built on the site of the ancient Pharos (lighthouse) of Alexandria. This morning we will fly from Cairo to Casablanca. Upon arrival our tour representative will meet us at the airport for transfer to the beautiful Le Casablanca Hotel and will then introduce us to the local area. (Dinner)

Monday, August 30: Casablanca
After breakfast, we will enjoy a guided city tour of Casablanca. A modern city and the trade capital of Morocco, Casablanca is a magnificent mix of modernism and tradition. We will visit the interior of Hassan II Mosque which is located by the sea and features a 600-foot minaret that dominates the city's landscape. Then we will drive to visit the Jewish Historical Museum of Morocco in the Oasis area, and Temple Beth-El, the Jewish Synagogue in Casablanca. Beth-El is considered the centerpiece of a once vibrant Jewish community. After lunch we will see the Mohammed V Palace and some of the new public buildings including the Grand Theater of Casablanca. Finally, we will visit the Habous Quartier, in the beachside suburb of Ain Diab. We will drive back to Le Doge for dinner. (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)

Tuesday, August 31: Casablanca/Rabat/Salé/ Volubilis/ Moulay Idriss/Meknes/Fez
After breakfast, we will drive to Morocco's nearby capital, Rabat. Strategically located on the Atlantic coastline, Rabat began as a settlement in the third century BCE. We will enjoy a tour of the Old City including the Hassan Tower Mosque, as well as the Kasbah of the Oudayas, including its lush Andalusian gardens. We will then continue to Salé, one of Morocco’s many hidden gems. Spending time in this laid-back ancient city, we will have a chance to see a side of everyday Moroccan life that most visitors miss. We will also have time to visit some of the town’s ancient religious monuments and to learn about the ancient crafts of Moroccan tile making and wood carving. We will then drive to the ancient Roman city of Volubilis. Recently listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and dating back to 40 CE, Volubilis is home to some of the most impressive Roman ruins in North Africa. Leaving Volubilis behind we will visit the nearby town of Moulay Idriss for a short tour, where we will have lunch at the lovely Dar Zerhoun restaurant. Finally, we continue to the Berber town of Meknes, formerly the capital of Morocco during the reign of Moulay Ismail. Our day ends with the short drive to Fez where we spend two nights. Dinner and overnight at the Fez Sahrai Hotel. (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)

Wednesday, September 1: Fez
This morning we will explore the spiritual capital of Morocco Fez, which for centuries was an important philosophical and intellectual center with magnificent libraries. In the Rosicrucian manifesto, the Fama Fraternitatis, it was in Fez that Brother CR (Christian Rosenkreutz) was introduced to the “elementary inhabitants” (gnomes, fairies, nymphs, etc.) who revealed many of their secrets to him and where he exchanged knowledge with the scholars there. We will see the entrance to the largest royal palace in Morocco and will stop in the ancient Medina quarter (Fez el Bali), a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This medieval center of Fez has not changed for centuries. We will see the Medersa Bou Inania (a Koranic school) and Jamaa Al-Karaouine, the oldest continuously functioning university in the world, founded in 859. After lunch in a local restaurant, we will return to the hotel to relax before dinner and overnight at the Fez Sahrai Hotel. (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)

Thursday, September 2: Chefchaouen/Fez

After breakfast we head north to Chefchaouen. Upon arrival, we will explore what is quite likely the most charming village in Morocco with its Medina, Bab el Ansar and the famed Ras el Maa (waterfall), where a short walk takes us to Rif Sebbanin, the laundry district with the Seat of Sebbanin and its 15th century mosque. Inside the ancient gated medina nearly every building is painted a vivid shade of blue that contrast stunningly with the terra cotta rooftops. Twisting cobblestone paths lead up and around the 15th century Kasbah to a landscape of green hills and mountaintops with uninterrupted sky extending beyond. Late in the afternoon, we will return to Fez for one more evening at our lovely hotel. (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)

Friday, September 3: Fez/Merzouga

We will start to discover some of Morocco's beautiful mountainous landscapes today as we leave Fez and follow ancient caravan routes up into the hills. Along the way we will stop at Ifran, known as the “Switzerland of Morocco” and a huge contrast to some of the other cities we will see in other parts of the country. The French government built Ifran in the 1930s with the intention of recreating an alpine style resort, and you'll see beautiful parks with lakes, flowerbeds, and red roofed houses throughout what was named the second cleanest city in the world in 2013. Next we will head through the hills to the town of Midelt where we will have lunch. We will continue through the scenic Ziz as we descend to Erfoud on the edge of the Sahara Desert. We will make the short trip to Rissani and the birthplace of the Alaouite Dynasty Morocco's current royal family. We will continue to Merzouga and drive in 4WD vehicles through the desert to the famous Erg Chebbi sand desert and take a sunset camel ride through the sand dunes to a traditional Berber camp nestled right on the edge of the dunes. We will enjoy spectacular views over the sand dunes as the sun sinks below the horizon before enjoying a hearty Bedouin meal and a desert campfire. We will spend the night sleeping in comfortable Berber camel-hair tents at Merzouga Luxury Camp. (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)

Saturday, September 4: Merzouga/Tinghir/Dades
This morning we will reluctantly leave the desert enroute to the oasis town of Tinghir a 24-mile oasis with one of the largest palm groves in the country. We will then enjoy a beautiful walk through the valley of the 900-foot Todra Gorge, carved deep into the High Atlas Mountains. After lunch at a local restaurant, we will drive through the Dades Canyon, enjoying stunning views of the steep cliffs and the river below which rushes dramatically through the gorge. Dinner and overnight at the Xaluca Hotel. (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)

Sunday, September 5: Dades/ Valley of the Rose/Skoura
After breakfast we will head to Skoura. On the way we will see a spectacular view of a vast valley dotted with small oases and hundreds of ancient fortifications. We will visit Kalaat M’gouna, “the rose city,” to purchase rosewater. We will stop for lunch and will arrive in Skoura by late evening. A quiet little village speckled with palm tree groves, this is where we will find Kasbah Amridil, a magnificent kasbah that stands out from the rest. Originally built in the seventeenth century, it is one of Morocco’s most iconic living museums that has withstood the test of time, making it the ideal setting for insights into the ancient traditions of kasbah life. We will have time for a short hike to a spot overlooking the valley and the old salt mines or to explore the Skoura Oasis. Dinner and overnight will be at the Ksar el Kebbaba. (Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner)

Monday, September 6: Ouarzazate/ Ait Benhaddou/Atlas Mountains/Marrakech
We start this morning with the short drive to Ouarzazate where, for centuries, people from the Atlas, Draa, and Dades Valleys have converged to conduct business at Ouarzazate’s sprawling Taourirt Kasbah. A massive citadel, it sits against the backdrop of the Atlas Mountains and contains almost 300 rooms within its walls. We will follow the maze of corridors to a prayer room on the top floor, which provides stunning views over Lake El Mansour Edhabbi. We will also visit Taourir and Ti-foultout Kasbahs, which are among the most beautiful kasbahs in Morocco. We will also visit the Atlas film studios where many famous movies have been filmed, including Lawrence of Arabia, The Last Temptation of Christ, The Mummy, Gladiator, Kundun, as well as part of the TV series Game of Thrones. Today's main highlight is a tour of Morocco's most well-known Kasbah at the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Ait Benhaddou. You can spend several hours in its maze of winding streets until reaching a fortified granary at the top which provides an amazing view of the valley. We will then head up into and across the Atlas Mountains for a beautifully scenic drive to Marrakech, crossing the Tizi N'tichka Pass, which at 7,415 feet is the highest pass in Northern Africa. We will check in to the Jardins de la Koutoubia where we will be for three nights. (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)

Tuesday, September 7: - Marrakech
This morning we will be met at our hotel for a half-day guided city tour, starting in the Medina, the old walled section of town and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Marvel at its architectural jewels, including the soaring Koutoubia minaret. Continue to the Bahia Palace, an exemplary specimen of privileged life in the nineteenth century. Our next stop is at the Tiskiwin Museum (Maison Tiskiwin), which houses an impressive collection of North African arts and crafts. The museum, which was founded by a Dutch anthropologist, is organized into geographically themed exhibits, with each room focusing on artifacts from different towns and regions along the ancient trade route from Marrakech to Timbuktu. Then we will visit Djemaa el-Fna, Marrakech’s main square, which is filled with orange juice stalls and vendors, along with fire-eaters, mime artists, snake charmers, and street musicians. We will enjoy lunch by the square. We may also explore some of the city’s souks. In the afternoon we will visit the Jardin Majorelle, including the Berber Museum, and the Islamic Museum of Art. Dinner and overnight at our hotel. (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)

Wednesday, September 8: Marrakech/Essaouira
After breakfast, we will drive to Essaouira where we will enjoy most of the day at leisure. This relatively small, easily navigable beach city is ideal for spending time exploring and reflecting on our magnificent journey together. Essaouira has a distinct multicultural feel, resulting from the large Portuguese, French, and Jewish populations that once called it home. Its mild climate and expansive stretches of ocean sand also place it among Morocco’s top beach towns. In 2001, Essaouira’s walled Medina was added as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.  Its well-preserved, late-eighteenth-century fortified layout is a prime example of European military architecture in North Africa. The mellow atmosphere, narrow winding streets lined with colorful shops, whitewashed houses, and heavy old wooden doors make it a wonderful place to stroll. We will enjoy lunch in a local restaurant next to the port. In the evening, we will drive back to Marrakech. Dinner and overnight at our hotel. (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)

Thursday, September 9: Marrakech
Today we will have free time in Marrakech until we are transferred to the airport for our departures back home.

Please note: This itinerary is subject to change and any changes made will be to enhance your experience!
